Sitting here in the dark of night
Imagining what it's like back home
Knowing you've decorated the house
Our kids anxious for Santa to come
Instead of being there with you
I'm in a dangerous and desolate land
Picturing the way you must look tonight
Pretending you're holding my hand
I know you didn't want me to go
But it's where my duty now lies
Leaving you at the dock that day
Made the tears well in my eyes
None of us wanted this awful war
Yet I fight for my strong convictions
Allegiance to a country where freedom dwells
Help me withstand terrible conditions
We must defeat those who practice oppression
To keep the fighting from American shores
So as we struggle for peace and equality
We help to open freedom's doors
I'm sorry I can't be home for Christmas
The first one we've spent apart
But until we're together once again
I'll hold you warmly in my heart
Darling, I know you can read my thoughts
And the way I'm feeling tonight
Please maintain the faith in my love for you
And keep the home fires burning bright
