During our
innocent years of growing up
We spent lots of time outside
A favorite place to sit was in the swing
Before they made the ones that glide
The first three to get there sat in the swing
Others got the chairs or the floor
Sometimes we sisters would all squeeze in
And then that old swing held four
We'd sing and swing to our heart's content
Never minding all the sour notes
Sometimes the boys would cover their ears
We'd sing louder just to get their goats
I didn't know then that our day-to-day lives
Would make for beautiful memories years later
Now that my sons are grown with homes of their own
Recalling those times make them seem much greater
Life's sure
not as simple as it used to be
I hardly sit on the porch anymore
Back then, our windows were left unlocked
And we didn't need deadbolts on the door My porch is neat and has plenty of chairs
From the roof hangs an old-fashioned swing
I sit there sometimes and watch the birds
Digress and listen to the wind chimes ring Be sure to stop in if you're passing by
Or if you happen to get the inclination
The welcome mat is clean and always out
And you don’t need an invitation
I always welcome seeing family and friends
So come on up and converse for a spell
I have a batch of homemade oatmeal cookies
And there's ice cold water in the well
I'm now what is known as a senior citizen
And naturally don't remember everything
But one special memory that has never left
Is of sisters sitting four in the swing
