The day was cold and windy
I had come to say good-bye
Together for such a little while
Leaving me to wonder why

The room was filled with flowers
From others who loved him too
I placed a yellow rose in his hand
Without him, what would I do

The soloist sang his favorite songs
And the minister spoke highly of him
Feeling as if I were in a trance
The life before me looking grim

Many veterans came to honor him
They gave a twenty-one gun salute
He was proud to have served our country
His allegiance always absolute

The military ceremony completed
The folded flag placed in my care
My hands shaking as I accepted it
Knowing he was no longer there

On that tearful day in winter
When it was time for me to go
I left my love beneath the ground
And our roses in the snow
