Mother's Pearls Something old on her wedding day To a young girl from her Mother Handed down with joy and pride And love for one another My Mother was the bride that day Almost seventy years ago She always treasured Grandma's pearls And had a tough row to hoe Through the years, that string of pearls Saved the family from starvation She had to pawn them many a time They became our family's salvation Mother always wore them proudly As had several generations Then she would lovingly put them away For other special occasions The time had come to pass them on That lovely string of pearls "Nothing but the best," Mother would say "Is good enough for my girls." My sisters and I now share the pearls And remember all the tradition Handed down for so many years Oh, what a sweet transition Kathleen McCoy Eldridge© January 24, 2006 All Rights Reserved
